Today we are spending the day in Oxford…looking for more Harry Potter inspirations and filming sites. Our guide is a PhD candidate at Exeter College in Oxford and does tours for fun.
Our first stop was the Oxford Union building. This is the home of the Oxford debate society. Getting admittance to the debate society is highly desirable as they have a very high number of of members who go on to become members of the British parliament or even prime ministers. We couldn’t go into the building, but the open garden area was lovely and peaceful.
Oxford has 30 colleges. A college is where the student lives, sleeps, eats and socializes. And takes classes. Although they can take classes in other colleges. Our first college was New College,...
where we visited the Dining Hall,
the antechapel,
and the chapel.
And all of the many libraries are open to all students but one must usually put in a formal request for access to a book and one cannot normally actually check out the book. You have to go to the respective library and do your research there.
We saw the outside of the Radcliffe Camera…a massive library that is closed to the public.
We also visited the Bodleian Library…
and the interior of the Divinity School associated with Bodleian. This building was particularly lovely on the inside.
We had a stop at one of the main libraries where Liam got to try on a cap and gown from the university.
This was on a table in the library. Sentiments of any student.
After the tour we had a very quick lunch and then headed off to Christ Church College...
where we saw the great staircase (used in a Harry Potter scene)
the Dining Hall (inspiration for the dining hall at Hogwarts school),
the chapel,
Tom Quad,
and Peckwater Quad.
The ceiling in the entrance to the Great Hall was particularly lovely.
Nearby was St Mary the Virgin Tower.
This is a Sun Dial that was designed by Christopher Wren (architect of St. Paul’s and many other great buildings in England).
More photos from our walk around Oxford.
After our tour we had time for a snack so found the nearest Gourmet Burger Kitchen, where we had milkshakes. Then it was off to catch the train back to London.
