July 13 – LEGO House

Today was a full day of fun at LEGO House.  The building looked like it was constructed from LEGOs.

This is a hands on experience with all things LEGOs.  First off we stopped at the exhibit that showed how LEGOs are made.  The molding and packaging operation ended by sending out little packets of six, 2 by 4, red LEGO bricks.

And the display indicated that using only those six little bricks they can be put together in 915,103,765 different configurations.  Wow!

There were a number of very large constructions, starting with a tree that was several floors high.  It was in the middle of the stairs that too guest all the way to the top of the building.

And a huge “wave” in one room.

And there were a number of much smaller constructions.  The creativity was amazing.

Liam got his face “configured” in LEGOs on a screen.

Liam also spent time making a short stop action LEGO movie.

There was an interactive “city building” area where you could build a small “building” on a small LEGO square (about 3” square) and then place the square on a very large table with little recesses to hold the squares.  Once enough squares were in place the “city” would activate and all the little LEGO people (projected from projectors above the table) would start moving.  In one area they moved towards a stadium.  In another it was a rock concert stage, etc.  Sort of fun.  We all built a few of these tiny buildings.

There was also a fascinating machine made of LEGOs...The House of Cards robot.  It was able to stack 124 standard playing cards in a tower with 8 floors.  Takes about 50 minutes.  WOW!!

We had lunch reservations at the Mini Chef restaurant...  and it was an experience.  We were given a "menu" from which to select our lunch items.  Each item had a picture of the LEGO piece beside it.

You assembled your lunch using the pieces on the table, the structure was then scanned by the scanner on the table.  And you could then watch the little LEGO men assemble your lunch.  There were tabletop screens that showed the kitchen activities.  Then the lunch (packed in a large LEGO box, came out on a conveyor belt.

There were so many amazing displays...huge constructions and small one.

And some massive dinosaurs.

Once Liam found the racing car activity we were stuck…for about three hours as he built and raced his cars.

Near the end of the day we ended up in the basement where we learned the history of LEGOs.  The company was started by a wooden toy maker.  In the 50’s they converted to plastic toys and eventually they focused on the plastic blocks we all know.

The origin of the name LEGO is from the Danish LEg GOtd, which means “play well”.

We closed the place down and then found a nearby Italian restaurant where we got pizza for dinner before walking back to the hotel.
